BLOOD LACTATE TESTING - TORONTO
TO Kinesiology offer blood lactate testing in our clinic in downtown Toronto (115 Wolseley Street).
Blood lactate testing measures the level of lactate (or lactic acid) in your blood. Lactate is a byproduct of anaerobic metabolism, which occurs when your body breaks down glucose for energy without enough oxygen. Using this test we can determine transitions between primarily aerobic and anaerobic energy systems during increasing exercise intensity (aerobic threshold and anerobic threshold). |
The test is commonly used in sports and medical settings to assess:
|
Aerobic Threshold The Aerobic Threshold, also known as VT1 (first ventilatory threshold), is the exercise intensity at which lactate begins to accumulate in the bloodstream, but still at a manageable rate. Below this point, the body primarily uses aerobic metabolism to meet energy demands. At the aerobic threshold, the rate of lactate production equals the rate of lactate clearance, so blood lactate concentrations remain relatively low and stable (typically under 2 mmol/L).
Anaerobic Threshold The anaerobic threshold, also known as the lactate threshold or VT2 (second ventilatory threshold), represents the point at which lactate accumulates at an accelerated rate in the blood because anaerobic glycolysis starts contributing significantly to energy production. This threshold typically corresponds to about 4 mmol/L of lactate in the blood. The anaerobic threshold marks the transition from predominantly aerobic energy production to a greater reliance on anaerobic metabolism, where the body can no longer clear lactate at the same rate it is being produced. Beyond this threshold, lactate production outpaces the body's ability to clear it, leading to higher concentrations in the bloodstream, which can cause muscle fatigue, discomfort, and eventually limit performance. This point is critical for athletes because it indicates the highest sustainable intensity they can maintain before fatigue sets in. |
WHAT TO EXPECT
Once you get to our clinic, we will start with an initial consultation to explain the procedure, determine appropriate testing protocol and decide whether we will be using a treadmill or a bike. We will start with a warm up/low exercise intensity as measured by treadmill speed or bike wattage. The intensity will progressively increase in 3-5 minute intervals. At the end of each interval, blood sample will be taken, usually from the fingertip or earlobe, to measure blood lactate concentration. We will also continuously monitor your heart rate and RPE (rate of perceived exertion). The test will continue until we detect a sharp rise in your lactate levels that occurs beyond your lactate threshold. After the testing is done, we will provide you with a report and explain the results and provide recommendations on how to integrate these findings into your training program. |
