VO2 Max and Metabolism Testing - TORONTO
VO2 Max, or maximal oxygen consumption, refers to the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilize during intense or maximal exercise.
This measurement is generally considered the best indicator of cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. The more oxygen you can use during high level exercise, the more energy you can produce. This test is the gold standard for determining cardio-respiratory fitness because the muscles need oxygen for prolonged aerobic exercise, and the heart must pump adequate amounts of blood through the circulation to meet the demands of aerobic exercise. Price: $120+tax *If you would like to determine your running V02 max or to perform field/sport-specific V02 max or outside to mimic actual competition conditions (e.g. wind resistance, humidity, terrain, etc.), we also provide mobile and on-site testing. Please email us at [email protected] to discuss details. **add metabolism test and/or spirometry test for an extra fee |
By putting a face mask on the subject, we can directly measure the volume and gas concentrations of inspired and expired air. This is the exact method and process used in research.
The test involves either exercising on an assault bike or treadmill at an intensity that increases every few minutes until exhaustion, and is designed to achieve a maximal effort. Here is some of the data we will obtain from the test:

WHAT TO EXPECT
The VO2 Max testing is an exercise test to determine calorie burn, lung health and cardiovascular function. We will challenge your aerobic fitness on one of the cardio machine like assault bike or treadmill. The whole test will last about 15 minutes. After a 3 minute warm up, difficulty is increased by a set amount each minute until exhaustion. Please wear exercise/gym clothes and expect a short workout. During the test, the machine will analyze oxygen consumed for each breath and CO2 concentration in expired breath. In addition to this, you'll wear a heart rate strap to monitor your heart rate response. This test can be combined with Metabolism test and/or Spirometry test to do a complete lung and cardiovascular assessment.
